Faith in facts

The Creator  has spoken, and truth can be read,
so we should believe all the things he has said:
the promises trust,
of him who is just.

The Creator has come, and the words can be read,
of witnesses telling he rose from the dead:
our faith is in him,
forgiveness of sin.

Praise

Hebrews 13:15,16
Recreated by God’s Holy Spirit to be
to the praise of his glorious grace;
and the fruit of true praise should be borne from those lips
which confess him and know his embrace.
Sacrificially giving God praise,
praise for all that he is and his ways;
will you give time and thought
to give praise as you ought?
through Christ Jesus continually praise.

And this fruit is produced when we study his Word,
when we meditate, realise, agree
with the facts there recorded to teach us that God
great and glorious always will be.

And the names of our God and his Christ teach us much
of his attributes, nature and ways.
He is holy, and loving, and just, and so good;
– for his wise, gracious actions give praise.

God almighty deserves all the effort we can
give to offering thanks, giving praise.
We can never atone for our sins, but receive
his salvation, and grace all our days.

Make peace, God approaches

2 Peter 3:3–10; Ps73:18–28
For a thousand years are like a day
just passing, to the LORD;
though the wicked seem to prosper, they
will tremble at his sword;
as a dream when one awakes, our God
will soon arise and wield his rod.
He will come establishing his rule.

‘All far from You will perish,
whoever is not true’;
but the LORD delights to lavish
his love, he’ll welcome you
if you make the LORD your refuge now,
and trust in Christ, and humbly bow.
He will come, – be ready for that Day
.

Men will scoff and say things still go on,
each year it’s much the same.
So men scoffed in days of Noah, long
ago, but judgement came.
By his Word this earth will disappear,
– in fire, – the Day is drawing near;
we will see an earth of righteousness.

In the days before the flood, men were
enjoying life each day.
So the wicked live so free of care,
not bothering to pray;
deride God’s laws, their sin they flaunt,
God’s power and justice scorn, and taunt.
But his purpose won’t be stopped by man.
Tune: ‘2000 Years’ by R.T.Bewes (No.32, Youth Praise)

The love of God

A love that willingly exchanged
the perfect wonder,
perfect honour,
perfect praise,
for weakness, schemes and sneers ranged
around, suspicion,
malicious, murderous intention.

For what? and why?
The only way that I
could be washed clean enough to enter holy heaven –
he took the penalty of death I’d earned, and I can be forgiven.

And now he does not slay all evil straight away,
but helps us while he calls to all who stray.

on Ephesians 1:3-14

Plan superb God is fulfilling:
universal, certain scheme:
bringing all his richest blessings,
sending Jesus to redeem,
rescuing for holiness,
from the bonds of wickedness.

He will soon rule over all things,
everything and everyone,
but believers are adopted,
willing service has begun,
sonship that cannot be earned,
futile rebel actions spurned.

So give heed to revelation
of this richest gospel grace;
as we wait for full redemption,
taste support and love’s embrace;
sealed – his Spirit lives within,
moulding us to follow him.

Knowing now where we are heading,
joyfully, we press ahead,
comforted in times of trial,
chastened, taught, and onward led;
serve our gracious God with awe,
praise our Saviour evermore.
Tune: Gounod (Let us love and sing and wonder) ( One there is above all others well deserves the name if Friend) 87 87 77 tune of ‘Once in royal David’s city’  or Ottawa (tune of Master Speak, thy servant heareth’)

Glimpses of glory

Moses saw a glimpse of glory,
glory of the LORD,
passing by, his name proclaiming,
self-revealing Word.
Glory, glory,
soon we’ll surely see
more than fleeting,
passing glimpses
of God’s majesty.

Glimpse of glory for Elijah,
and God’s voice he heard
telling of God’s certain purpose:
quiet, effective Word.

All the crowd saw Jesu’s power
when he made the bread
and the fish to feed the hungry:
sign to all who fed.

Later Christ showed his disciples
glimpse of glory, for
he walked by upon the water,
filling them with awe.

Still they needed explanations,
faith to comprehend,
understand the implications,
trust their sovereign Friend.

On the mount he was transfigured,
voice from heaven heard,
(Peter, James and John were frightened):
awesome, gracious Word.
Glory, glory,
in God’s Word we see
glory, grace of Christ eternal,
and his majesty.

Tune: ‘Pass me not’ by William H Doane (408 Grace Hymns) 85 85+

Principles from Psalms 1&2

Those heeding earth’s Creator stand
and flourish, under his command,
but those who boast rebellious thought
rejecting what he sent and taught
will have, he says, their day in court,
and like the chaff, the words they say
with them will quickly blow away,
their influence passing, short their day.

The great Creator sees and hears –
men’s cleverness to him appears
as folly, for their vision’s short –
imperfect knowledge, and flawed thought.
So who will listen? he informs
of wisdom that we need, and warns,
appeals, foretells, and offers grace
once purchased for the human race.

God’s Providence

An able Creator protects and upholds
the stars, and the bud which so neatly unfolds,
the rocks of the mountain, the tit in the tree,
the beautiful lily, the robin, and me.
Give praise to God most high for all his supply,
for food and for clothing, – so rich a supply.
Give praise to God most high for all his supply,
and trust in his mercy, and wisdom, for ever, Amen.

An able Creator was saddened to see:
when tempted, Eve took of the fruit of the tree.
She tasted God’s judgement – the ‘curse’ had begun,
yet still he protected, and sent us his Son.

There’s much in this world that man can’t understand,
the grief and the troubles allowed by God’s hand;
like Job we may wonder, may pray, and may cry,
God’s constant provision we cannot deny.

God does not delight in men dying in sin;
and Jesus bore judgement, there’s freedom in him,
but all who refuse will themselves have to pay,
for them God’s provision will finish one day.

God knows all about every sheep on the hill;
in life and in death always tends to them still;
so do not refuse all the grace he supplies:
forgiveness, adoption, and providence wise.

Whatever we have should be used to his praise,
and we can help others in numberless ways;
Forgiving our foes, for by mercy we live:
we freely receive, so we freely should give.

(inspired by the Welsh hymn ‘Mae’r Arglwydd yn cofio y Dryw yn y drain’ by Gomer M Roberts, – the chorus is basically a translation;
and can be sung to the same tune, ‘Mair’ by D E Williams, Treforys)

and for children

He glances through the galaxy,
he scans me through and through.
He watches fishes in the sea,
and calls to me and you
to learn his ways,
and sing his praise,
and tell him of our fears.
Although he knows,
he helps all those
who pray and ask, – he hears.

He sees through all the dark of night,
and through the fog and haze.
No danger’s hidden from his sight,
no secret from his gaze.
Our need he knows,
so let’s be those
who tell him of our fears,
and always pray
his help all day
– he watches and, he hears.
Tune: CM+ God Sees by S W Straub

and for children

(Job chapters 38–41)
Could you fish a crocodile,
or hook a dinosaur?
tell a shark to ‘wait awhile’,
and shake a lion’s paw?

Have you told the sun to rise,
explored through all the earth,
flown through space to check the skies,
watched mountain goats give birth?

Can you care for, and protect
the birds, and find their food?
Show me how you would direct
the thunder, for our good.

Can you talk to leopards wild,
tame rhinos, put a lead
on a cheetah for a child –
a pet of super speed! – ?

No! you’re not as strong as God:
the King who understands
all that happens in our world,
and rules with kind commands.

Do you ever grumble, whine, –
and pester, sulk or moan,
feeling bored most of the time,
for nothing’s really fun?

Friends can let you down, – who cares?
who’s always near by?
and loves to help and answer prayers,
and never tells a lie?
