1 John 4:8,9
Love is not merely sentiment and kiss,
desire for good – its essence you will miss
if you don’t see love’s action, sacrifice
bear shame and malice in another’s place.
Love stooped to wash disciples’ dirty feet,
then bore the lashes, scorn and nails, to beat
the devil’s scheme of slavery, for thus
Jesus, by awful sufferings deep, saved us.
‘He can’t escape!’ they said as they passed by,
so unaware how willing was the ‘why’
– he chose to stay upon the cross to die
so he could give us love we couldn’t buy.
