Jonah learns

(Jonah 1:3,17; 2:1,2,9,10 & 3:1)
If I’m not honest when I fail,
let down my God, I may
cause some to suffer as I hide:
I should seek God and pray.

For salvation can only come from
the Lord and Saviour, and he commanded
the fish that he provided,
to bring Jonah to dry land.

God takes his chosen time to teach,
through darkness he may lead
in love, that I may hear his voice
and feel my guilt and need.

In quietness, distractions gone,
He shows I’m small and weak,
and what a privilege if he
wants me for him to speak.

If God delivers and forgives,
commissions you once more,
don’t take it easy, or presume,
– his Word do not ignore.
Tune: I know whom I have believed.

Psalm 9: 1,2

Wholehearted praise,
through all my days;
look on his ways,
reflective gaze:

his great creation,
and preservation,
gracious salvation,
regeneration.

We taste each day
help as we pray,
by grace we stay,
and want his way;

his love has taught,
our life he’s bought,
and so we sought,
our love he caught.

I need not fear
when you are near,
from guilt I’m clear,
in Christ, I’m dear;

and so rejoice
in heart and voice,
pardoned and glad,
cannot be sad.

Now songs will swell,
from hearts so full,
his church will tell,
and praise full well.

Let truth enter in

Prepared to believe in men’s lies, futile thought,
instead of believing the truth God has taught,
with thinking affected and coloured by sin:
Don’t follow the masses – let truth enter in.

For most do not live in the light of God’s Word,
and can’t understand when true wisdom is heard;
their reasoning’s darkened, things spiritual seem
perplexing, and nonsense, a joke or a dream.

They never have tasted the life of the Lord.
Have you been enlightened, your vision restored?
Those negligently sliding away from Life’s source,
will find so-called pleasures soon leave them far worse.

Don’t lose sensitivity, hearts that take care
to listen and ponder God’s words that you hear;
if hardened, his words you don’t care to recall,
you won’t enjoy peace in your floundering soul.

The deeper one swims into selfishness, sin,
the beckoning vision, of pardon, grows dim;
so turn from the wastage of lust, foolish pride,
and draw near to Christ, know content at his side.

He has triumphed

Revelation  chapter 5
Who is worthy to fulfil the Father’s plan?
The Lion, Lamb, Messiah, Son of Man,
who had authority to rule, reveal, redeem,
and love to leave the throne, as Substitute be slain:
he bought us, by his blood,  from darkness, death,
to God, from every corner of the earth,
to serve him in his kingdom: so we’ll bring
eternal worship to our Saviour-King.

Faith in facts

The Creator  has spoken, and truth can be read,
so we should believe all the things he has said:
the promises trust,
of him who is just.

The Creator has come, and the words can be read,
of witnesses telling he rose from the dead:
our faith is in him,
forgiveness of sin.

the unmerciful servant . . .

Matthew 18:21-35
Massively in debt: we’ve squandered
so much, and abused
grace, and negligently wandered,
– gifts and skills misused.

We can’t pay what’s owing, fully,
but by faith we know
debt is cancelled, – all our folly,
everything we owe.

And we need to be forgiving,
bitterness must cease;
those who harbour grudges, brooding,
cannot find God’s peace.

A song from Isaiah

Isaiah chapter 26:1–27:6
The people of God have a song
– by faith we have come to this place
– salvation, impregnably strong.
O LORD, we delight in your grace!

He’ll keep them in peace, perfect peace,
who steadfastly trust in the LORD.
He smooths out their paths, and they cease
to fret, waiting, sure of his Word.

The wicked regard not, nor learn
God’s majesty, laws, and his care.
Affliction should cause us to turn,
approach him and whisper our prayer.

His vineyard will flourish, bear fruit.
He watches and guards every day ,
and thorns who make peace are not burnt.                    .
Powers cunning, and sly he will slay.

The vine will spread out through the earth,
be firmly established, take root;
will bud, and will blossom, break forth:
the world will be filled with good fruit!

Tune: 88 88 eg Celeste (tune of ‘How good is the God we adore’)

The love of God

A love that willingly exchanged
the perfect wonder,
perfect honour,
perfect praise,
for weakness, schemes and sneers ranged
around, suspicion,
malicious, murderous intention.

For what? and why?
The only way that I
could be washed clean enough to enter holy heaven –
he took the penalty of death I’d earned, and I can be forgiven.

And now he does not slay all evil straight away,
but helps us while he calls to all who stray.

on Ephesians 1:3-14

Plan superb God is fulfilling:
universal, certain scheme:
bringing all his richest blessings,
sending Jesus to redeem,
rescuing for holiness,
from the bonds of wickedness.

He will soon rule over all things,
everything and everyone,
but believers are adopted,
willing service has begun,
sonship that cannot be earned,
futile rebel actions spurned.

So give heed to revelation
of this richest gospel grace;
as we wait for full redemption,
taste support and love’s embrace;
sealed – his Spirit lives within,
moulding us to follow him.

Knowing now where we are heading,
joyfully, we press ahead,
comforted in times of trial,
chastened, taught, and onward led;
serve our gracious God with awe,
praise our Saviour evermore.
