Not hypocrites

(Matthew 6:1-18)
When we’ve opportunity
for kind acts of charity,
(not to feed our vanity,
or for popularity):
if some note our helpful ways,
may they bring our Father praise.

Do we, in a private place,
seek God’s glory, seek his face?
and when publicly we pray,
still sincere, no proud display
that is trying to impress,
– just transparent godliness.

Fasting, prayer in self-abasement,
not to gain respect, amazement,
but with time for concentration,
focussing our full attention
on our God, and supplication
in repentance, and devotion.

Live in private as outside,
always seeking to abide
by His Word, as in His view:
then what others see is true,
and they know who works in us,
forming humble righteousness.

Where is Christ?

Not on the cross,
Not in the ground, –
Alive!
his powerful help, compassion
can be found.
He knows your heartache:
ask for what you need,
without self-righteousness,
or selfish greed;
he understands what we don’t see,
his mercy, comfort
and support are free.

The poor, happy goblin

A goblin found an elixir,
and drank it in a trice;
– it changed his spiteful core, and made
him really rather nice.
Unshakeable his knowledge now
that he would truly never
completely fully die, instead
he’d somehow live for ever:
with inexhaustable supply
of life – he could not fully die.

The other goblins, they observed
and saw this pleasant change:
– ‘a passing phase’, they thought – a bit
embarrassing, and strange.

But when they found he could not join
in unkind schemes and sneaky games,
they got annoyed, and hit his head,
and snarled out nasty names;
they thought that such refusing
was actually accusing:
disturbed in their complacent ease
of mischief-making as they please.

‘You don’t support our dubious rules,
but we can make you, you must choose,
and if you don’t agree to do
as told, we’ll smack you ’til your blue.’

But even when they warned they’d kill,
he couldn’t re-corrupt his will,
or vomit out the mystic draught
that had implanted peace of heart –
when pain complete, fresh life would start.

Oh, poor goblin, yet not poor,
but happy, free of hate, secure.

The Light of the world

‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ John 8:12
The light revealing God,
the light that shows the way
which leads from darkness, sin and death
to joy and peace today.

Christ is the one, true light
of power and purity.
The one who made the sun and stars,
can show the truth to me.

He went ahead through death,
so follow in his light;
his Spirit strengthens, and his Word
will counsel, guide aright.

Disasters

This earth was perfect, now it’s flawed,
perfection soon will be restored,
but now uncertain are the days,
and troubles rise in many ways,
so we must turn our eyes upon
him who can help, neglected One;

instead of anger for what’s come,
no longer help and mercy shun,
for soon he will take death away –
we need to pray before that day
to him who is a King who can
forgive and rescue mortal man.

Praying like Paul

Ephesians 3:16–19
Strengthen with power infinite;
grace may your Spirit pour;
strengthen us in our inmost souls,
tasting your riches more.
Father, our gracious God, I bow
humbly, in faith, I ask you now,
grace and reviving may we know.

Christ then will dwell within our hearts –
not just a short-term guest.
Welcomed by faith, his word obeyed,
– richly we will be blessed.

Rooted, established in his love;
may he give all his own
power to perceive how vast Christ’s love, –
depth of the love he’s shown.

Love that surpasses knowledge, – can’t
fully be understood
by anyone; I pray he will
fill you with all things good.

Personal Instructor

I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. Psalm 16:7
A counsellor by day and night,
instructor true within
to train in ways of truth and right,
exposing devious sin.

He knows my feelings and my mind,
Christ’s Spirit can prevail –
mould me to be more gentle, kind,–
and sorry when I fail.

He knows his Word of righteousness;
His truth meets every need;
in times of ease and hours of stress,
his wisdom may I heed.

Guard your heart

Ephesians 6:14   &   Proverbs 4:20-27
A breastplate of righteousness
protecting our hearts
– imputed, – and holiness
Christ’s Spirit imparts:
your will and emotion
keep safe under guard,
by good application
each day of God’s Word.

Our speech cleansed and guarded,
with words to do good;
our eyes trained and guided
away from the lewd.
Keep on the path founded
on truth, – not thin ice
where pitfalls abound and
temptations entice.

Bible characters

We’ve learnt in the Bible
how many were brave,
and knew God’s forgiveness,
for Jesus could save;
they trusted, and worshipped,
and thought about heaven,
and shared all the good things
that they had been given.

Even me! even me!
I can trust him and pray.
Even me! even me!
I can be kind today.
This world will be better
if I do my part.
Oh, Jesus please help me,
and live in my heart!

You’ve heard about Abraham,      (or, Abram, and)
Moses and Paul,
but maybe not Anna,
or Caleb at all:
so many had courage
through faith in the Lord,
to do what was right,
and to live by his Word.

Feverish souls

Revelation 3:3  Luke 4:38,39
Spirit’s ills are easily caught –
gloom spreads quickly around:
feeding neglected and minds untaught;
feverish souls abound.
Spirits revived and restored to health,
strength and health, inward wealth;
sprits revived and restored to health;
Jesus they serve with joy.

Tossing, reckless, minds cannot stay
calm for reading and prayer, –
flicking through pages – thoughts far away:
anxious and full of care.

Patience low, and zeal up and down;
trivial remedies given. –
What brought it on – are there ‘germs’ around?
Yes, ’til we get to heaven.

Sin surrounds us, filth everywhere
can infect everyone.
Turn to the Saviour in humble prayer; –
ask Jesus Christ to come.

Strength is sapped, and beauty is marred,
hope becomes rather dim.
Jesus can help when the way seems hard.
– Put all your trust in him.
