Christ’s humility

Philippians 2:5–7
Christ, blessed Son of God
through all eternity,
took on himself incarnate form:
perfect humility.

Christ, Lord and King of all,
leaving his glory came,
willingly served unselfishly,
bearing our wage, sin’s shame.

Humble, unselfish mind
take on that you may serve,
thinking of others’ needs, concerns, –
God’s grace in them observe.

Such binds the Body’s bonds;
pride breaks its unity.
Struggle to keep you attitude –
prayerful humility.
Tune: SM eg Bod Alwyn

Heavenly Praise

Revelation chapter 5
The Lamb who once was slain,
the Lion is alive.
He triumphed and will reign;
he’s worthy to receive –
all glory, praise that we can bring,
amazing song his saints must sing, –
a purchased people worshipping.

He bought us with his blood,
from every language, land,
a kingdom, priests for God:
redeemed as grace had planned.
All glory …

Eternal One, the Root
of David’s mighty clan;
and Jesse’s promised Shoot, –
almighty Son of Man.
All glory …

Tune: 66 66 888 eg Rhosymedre by John David Edwards

‘Who do you say I am?’

Mark 8:27–29
Who am I? What do they say?
What opinion’s voiced today?
Men say much and compliment you,
still don’t realise who has sent you.
Cannot see your saving mission,
and identity unique.

Who am I? Do you now see?
what my Father willed for me?
You’re the Prophet great appointed,
you’re the Priest and King anointed,
Son of God, the servant suffered,
Christ triumphant, living Lord.

What is truth? ideas rise:
people dream, invent, surmise.
Some opinions can be tested.
Some can be disproved, contested;
truth of God will stand, attested:
God who knows, reveals, makes clear.

Tune: of ”Who is he in yonder stall?’

Incarnate Son of God

1 John 1:1-2:2
Incarnate Son of God –
the Word of Life appeared,
was gazed upon and touched by men –
who told the words they heard.

For God is perfect light,
and sin has come between –
estrangement, rift, but Jesus Christ
can purify, make clean.

Deserving judgement just,
but if we walk with him,
he is our sacrifice, he bore
God’s wrath, and took our sin.

Now fellowship with God,
the Father and the Son,
and fellowship with fellow saints –
the heavenly joy begun.     Tune: SM

The Incarnation

The angels look on in great wonder,
God’s people are filled with great awe,
for all that exists had its being
from him whom the wise men adore!
Amazed! amazed!
through faith understand, be amazed!
and marvel, with wonder:
let Jesus for ever be praised!

The Ruler of all, in the manger;
and soon he’d be hated, instead
of glory and worship and honour,
with nowhere to lay down his head.

God’s wisdom and gracious atonement,
his covenant made with his Son,
the great condescension of Jesus
in taking on weak human form.

He humbled himself as a servant
and suffered, obedient to death,
the death on the cross as an offering
that we might receive the new birth.
Tune: 98 98 + ‘Redeemed” by W J Kirkpatrick

Malice against Christ

Mark 2:7,16,24; 3:5,6
Don’t want to see the obvious,
nor truth accept, admit,
out to destroy, they’re devious,
won’t follow or submit.

Wrongly interpreting his law,
ignorant of the Lord,
falsely inventing faults, abhor
One who should be adored.

Anger and grief and deep distress
for those who would not pray.
Christ tells the man his arm to stretch –
see him, by faith, obey!

What he could not, that thing he did,
– strengthened, he could fulfil,
as he obeyed. – The others burned,
broke their own laws, to kill.

Tune: CM

Matthew 4:1-11

The devil tempted Christ that he
might sin, no longer fit to be
a sacrifice for you and me.

The devil tempted Christ to turn –
his Father’s will to doubt or spurn,
but on God’s Word the Son stood firm.

The devil tempted Christ to test
his Father’s care – such sin resist.
Do not misuse the Scripture text.

The devil tempted Christ to lust
for glory vain by misplaced trust.
Satanic lures abhor, detest.

Defeated Satan went away;
and angels served Christ’s needs, so pray
God’s help to battle day by day.

Zacchaeus

(Luke 19:1-10)
Materialistic, lonely, lost;
impressed by One who showed
real interest, – and this welcomed Guest
salvation grace bestowed.
He met with Jesus Christ, and now
he’s changed for ever, – hear his vow,
and watch, and see, and notice how

his life and ways have changed.

He used to live to try to get
however much he could,
but now he wants to give, his debt
restore fourfold, do good.

This rogue was mastered by his greed,
but now he’s ruled by grace, –
for righteousness has come indeed
by Jesus to this place.
Tune: 86 86 88 86 eg Faith (Swiss Melody) (356 Grace Hymns)

and for children
A for Adam who did wrong,
bringing death to everyone.
Z is for Zacchaeus, who
lived the way he wanted to (do you?).
But he welcomed Jesus in,
learnt that he should turn from sin.
No more greedy,
helped the needy:
change of heart,
a fresh new start.
(tune of ‘ABCDEFG’)

The people were amazed

Mark 1:15,22,24
Amazed at his manner of teaching –
so clear, so simple: the Son,
without all the fog of traditions,
to tell them the message had come.
Repent! believe! the time of salvation is here.
Repent! believe! God’s kingdom and mercy is near.

The Son of the King; whose experience
and knowledge of God was unique; –
but will they debate and dispute it,
or trust as they hear Jesus speak.

The demons can’t trust, so they tremble;
they know they are cornered, and fear.
They grab what they can, but the One that
can silence, arrest them is here.
Repent! believe! the demons can’t trust, only fear.
Repent! believe! for we can receive what we hear.

So people should not just discuss him,
ignore, or despair, or despise,
but turn to Christ Jesus, away from
all evil, uncleanness and lies.

Viewing the cross

(Mark 15:9–11, 29–32, 38,39)
Hatred, hatred deaf and blind
for the One so good and kind, –
hatred that will not consider
this is God the Son they murder.

Love, eternal love, – how can
he be treated thus by man?
Love almighty lets it be
so that he can rescue me.

Mockingly they hail him King,
words that scorn his truth they bring,
‘Look he dies, he cannot save!’
No! to save, – his life he gave!

Hour ordained by prophecy, –
pivot-point, not tragedy, –
solemn scene in darkness see:
‘What does all this mean to me?’

Judgment on the righteous Son –
punished for what I have done,
through what agony he’s passed,
willingly he breathes his last.

Curtain torn, the barrier’s gone
– reconciliation won.
‘Son of God’ – what grace and power:
history’s defining hour!
