on John 10:40-43

The truth we tell is the same today
as the truth made known of old;
for if truth is truth it is here to stay,
and so must again be told.
O, let it be said, Lord Jesus,
what we spoke of you was true
.

And people want to be told the truth,
though they may not want to hear,
and may turn aside to the dreams of youth,
or may mock, despise, or jeer.

And who knows, one day they may see the Light,
and accept that truth they heard;
not changed by seeing a wondrous sight,
but by truth their hearts are stirred.

The word of truth is of Christ, the Lord;
of Christ, the Judge, the Lamb.
We must not add to his glorious Word, –
but the truth we must proclaim.

Ephesians 2:4

When dead in transgressions and slave to my sin,
with Satan my ruler unkind,
unable to break from the pathway to hell,
change the lusts or the thoughts of my mind:
Was it well, with my soul,
was it well, was it well with my soul?

When  I spent  my time at my latest delight,
rejecting, ignoring the LORD,
though sometimes ashamed, and perplexed, and cast down,
still I had no desire for his Word:

When bound by my habits, replacing true joy
with pleasures or gathering wealth, –
encouraged by lies from the tyrant of souls,
deaf to words that could bring lasting health;

But when, by God’s grace, I awoke to my plight,
perceived, heard his wonderful call,
put trust in the Saviour, reborn by his power, –
was it well? It was well with my soul!
It is well, with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

2 Corinthians 4:6

In darkness, light was born,
created, shining out
from where before there had been none:
he spoke, and who dare doubt.

The law shines in to show
what we are like within,
but cannot change the things we do,
and pardon us our sin.

But gospel grace transforms
our darkness into light,
we’re counted just in Christ, now sons
who in his words delight.

And those who say they trust
they’ve kept the law right well,
should think again, – though it is just,
they’ve not obeyed it all.

But once in Christ we can
bear fellowship with God,
his glory does not frighten, burn:
we love to know our Lord.

Full access now, and free,
that never is denied,
for we have Christ, the password, key,
– in him all is supplied.

Romans 1:16,17

I’m not ashamed of the gospel,
the gospel of Christ, the Lord:
the power of God for salvation –
his mercy and love outpoured.
How marvellous! how wonderful!
gospel way has been made known!
How marvellous! how wonderful!
Righteousness by faith alone!

I’m not ashamed of the gospel
which comes from the Perfect One,
though people misrepresent him,
and all he has said and done.

I’m not ashamed of the gospel
that offers a gift so good:
new life, peace, pardon and power
for living the way we should.

I’m not ashamed of the gospel
– for people in every place,
for men and women and children –
the gospel of love and grace.

Are you ashamed of the gospel,
or think that it is ‘absurd’?
True faith receives Christ, takes refuge.
Be wise and believe his Word!

Christ’s humility

Philippians 2:5–7
Christ, blessed Son of God
through all eternity,
took on himself incarnate form:
perfect humility.

Christ, Lord and King of all,
leaving his glory came,
willingly served unselfishly,
bearing our wage, sin’s shame.

Humble, unselfish mind
take on that you may serve,
thinking of others’ needs, concerns, –
God’s grace in them observe.

Such binds the Body’s bonds;
pride breaks its unity.
Struggle to keep you attitude –
prayerful humility.

Heavenly Praise

Revelation chapter 5
The Lamb who once was slain,
the Lion is alive.
He triumphed and will reign;
he’s worthy to receive –
all glory, praise that we can bring,
amazing song his saints must sing, –
a purchased people worshipping.

He bought us with his blood,
from every language, land,
a kingdom, priests for God:
redeemed as grace had planned.
All glory …

Eternal One, the Root
of David’s mighty clan;
and Jesse’s promised Shoot, –
almighty Son of Man.
All glory …

Tune: 66 66 888 eg Rhosymedre by John David Edwards

‘Who do you say I am?’

Mark 8:27–29
Who am I? What do they say?
What opinion’s voiced today?
Men say much and compliment you,
still don’t realise who has sent you.
Cannot see your saving mission,
and identity unique.

Who am I? Do you now see?
what my Father willed for me?
You’re the Prophet great appointed,
you’re the Priest and King anointed,
Son of God, the servant suffered,
Christ triumphant, living Lord.

What is truth? ideas rise:
people dream, invent, surmise.
Some opinions can be tested.
Some can be disproved, contested;
truth of God will stand, attested:
God who knows, reveals, makes clear.

Tune: of ”Who is he in yonder stall?’

Incarnate Son of God

1 John 1:1-2:2
Incarnate Son of God –
the Word of Life appeared,
was gazed upon and touched by men –
who told the words they heard.

For God is perfect light,
and sin has come between –
estrangement, rift, but Jesus Christ
can purify, make clean.

Deserving judgement just,
but if we walk with him,
he is our sacrifice, he bore
God’s wrath, and took our sin.

Now fellowship with God,
the Father and the Son,
and fellowship with fellow saints –
the heavenly joy begun.     Tune: SM

The Incarnation

The angels look on in great wonder,
God’s people are filled with great awe,
for all that exists had its being
from him whom the wise men adore!
Amazed! amazed!
through faith understand, be amazed!
and marvel, with wonder:
let Jesus for ever be praised!

The Ruler of all, in the manger;
and soon he’d be hated, instead
of glory and worship and honour,
with nowhere to lay down his head.

God’s wisdom and gracious atonement,
his covenant made with his Son,
the great condescension of Jesus
in taking on weak human form.

He humbled himself as a servant
and suffered, obedient to death,
the death on the cross as an offering
that we might receive the new birth.
Tune: 98 98 + ‘Redeemed” by W J Kirkpatrick

Malice against Christ

Mark 2:7,16,24; 3:5,6
Don’t want to see the obvious,
nor truth accept, admit,
out to destroy, they’re devious,
won’t follow or submit.

Wrongly interpreting his law,
ignorant of the Lord,
falsely inventing faults, abhor
One who should be adored.

Anger and grief and deep distress
for those who would not pray.
Christ tells the man his arm to stretch –
see him, by faith, obey!

What he could not, that thing he did,
– strengthened, he could fulfil,
as he obeyed. – The others burned,
broke their own laws, to kill.
