A friend of God?!

A treasured prize invaluable
– it should seem quite incredible
that God, Creator, holy, pure
could friendship want, desire, endure
with us – but it is so, we’re filled
with awe, and startled hearts are thrilled.

Religions fear a wrath they must
somehow appease if it is just,
and never could conceive, or dare
hope such a Being would, could care
for friendship – that would seem absurd,
until Christ’s victory is heard.

The access he has opened, and
now beckons, calls with love’s command
to all who hide: to come, receive,
repent of sins, draw near, believe.
Have you desired, asked him to be
your special Friend eternally?

For then you’ll taste that friendship warm
enjoyment in the calm and storm
in sharing, comforted – intend
to always please your Father, Friend,
and value friendship of all who
walk with him on this journey new.

James  2: 23 Abraham believed God … he was called God’s friend.

You will answer my prayer

Hear me, O Lord, I look to you
– the tasks before me I can’t do
unless you help, and come to me –
and yours the victory will be.

Your enemies and mine lurk near,
but you, my call will always hear.
Instruct me that I may display
your truth, your light, your life, your way.

Give me an undivided heart,
and cleanse me, keep me set apart
– confusion’s mire surrounds, they need
a beacon to life’s Rock to lead.

Prosper eternal plans of good,
and help me do the things I should.
Lord, comfort me, that they will see
that you, the King show grace to me.

Tune: LM

Ruth speaks …

(based on the book, ‘Ruth’ in the Bible)

They came here from Judah,
for scarceness of food
was making life hard.
They were hoping for good
in Moab. I married a son,
and slowly I learned
of the God they had known:
his saving provisions,
but hardships, afflictions
when his people forgot
and assumed that their lot
would always be pleasant
however they lived.
[When they realised they’d grieved
their holy Protector who
loved them so dearly,
and they showed they were clearly
sorry, and properly prayed
he helped and he rescued
and mercy displayed.]

The father, he’d died,
soon Mahlon died too,
and also his brother;
my mother-in-law wondered
what then she should do:
she heard things were better
in Judah, now blessed
with food, so decided
to return, but she stressed
my sister-in-law, Orpah
and I should abide,
stay here, but she prayed
God would kindly provide
us husbands anew.
But now I could see
her faith and her God,
and I chose that they’d be
mine also, and so
I stayed with her, went with her
to help her, we both
would lean on this Saviour,
in life and in death.

*******

Arriving in Bethlehem,
as harvest began,
I went to glean grain
in the field of a man
named Boaz, who proved
to be thoughtful and kind
and ordered protection
and made sure I would find
plenty of stalks
left-over to thresh.
He had heard how I’d
stayed with Naomi
and trusted their God.
She knew him to be
a kinsman-redeemer
who could be allowed to
support us, accepting
me now as his wife,
and buying their family’s
land. And my life
with him has been blessed
and happy, so glad
I found refuge and rest
and a share in God’s care.

Feelings or Facts?

Appealing bells,
sensuous incense,
awe-inspiring spires,
enchanting chanting
thrilling, enthralling:
surface magic and excitement;
high ceilings lift aloft,
thoughts drift,
mellow spirit glowing –
yet from these little learning,
that in the knowing
can gird the mind
when in the cold of daily grind,
groping, groaning, hurt and blind.

Relaxing, fragrant, ‘bubble-bath’,
escape awhile, refreshment –
perplexing thoughts
unreached, untouched
untaught, unsatisfied,

until

hear words of truth
– though these may not caress, allure,
they enter aural gate unlocking light
producing courage to endure
distress,
and satisfying mental sense,
intelligence.

What’s the odds

Was it really by some luck
from a mixed and murky muck
of chemical soup,
that these sequences specific
of multiple atomic
precise, complex arrangements
somehow stuck?

able to initiate
molecular constructions
which twisted and consisted
in contortions,
that protected, and reacted
usefully
for energy production,
survival, respiration,
with nanosized machinery
to preserve, repair
from the wear and tear
on polymers delicate and intricate – ?

It must have been
an infinite string
of unlikely and co-incident,
colossal and incredible
chances,
strokes of luck improbable
again, again, again, again … … … ?

Or a genius skill
and supernatural will
with power to combine
what would otherwise decline,
imagined and designed,
and could gather, build and bind
bring together
all at once
this awesome architecture,
of the structure and the business
of the chemistry
of life?

Equipped

(2 Timothy 3:15-17)

Equipped to work for God,
do what he wants us to;
he gifts us, but he gives his Word
to train us through and through.

These writings holy are
told to us on his breath,
and they are able to make wise
and lead to saving faith.

Time given to read will profit –
his purposes we learn,
surrounded by ungodliness
to truth and light we turn.

Here taught the way to live
– rebuke is safe and kind,
correction lifts from foolish slide:
well-trained in heart and mind.

I want to live for him,
God’s man or woman, I
would live by faith, believe his word,
its teaching well apply.

Tune: SM

Productive Word

As rain comes down on earth
and causes plants to grow,
God’s word accomplishes the things
he’s saying will be so.

Th’eternal God reveals,
declares his mind, decrees:
he spoke – and light and life were born
with supernatural ease.

Christ stood before the tomb,
told Lazarus to come out,
though four days dead, his life returned:
Christ’s call and power don’t doubt.

His gospel promise heard
can open up the mind
to understand, and truth believe,
with power his peace to find.

When Israel groaned as slaves,
God’s promise clear they heard –
he’d rescue them from Egypt’s land:
he then fulfilled his word.

When exiled far away
in Babylon, God said
he’d bring them back in seventy years,
and that is what he did.

He promises to come,
renew this damaged earth;
we know his promises have power
to bring their plans to birth.

Tune: SM  eg Franconia by J B König  (tune of ‘Blest are the pure in heart’) or Trentham by Robert Jackson or Carlisle by Charles Lockhart (tunes of ‘Breathe on me, breath of God’)  or Venice by W Amps (tune of ‘When God begins a work’)

As the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10,11

Two Kings, Two Feasts

The Despot Herod held a feast,
and showed himself a tyrant beast,
gave to the dancer her vile wish
of righteous John’s head on a dish.

But, Jesus saddened, found a place
of quiet, but crowds still sought his face,
he had compassion on their need,
and gave them truth and bread to feed.

What contrast seen in these two kings,
the one abused the power fear brings,
the other as a Shepherd cared,
and healed and fed, salvation shared.

And he is still a Shepherd-King
who welcomes all to come to him.
He knows you through and through, he’ll lead,
and satisfy soul-hunger, feed.

Comeuppance

Hung on the gallows he built for another

H, by King X to honour was raised,
H, by King X was empowered and praised;
but H was so angry that M wouldn’t bow,
‘Vengeance on all of the Jews’ – his vow.

H had a sizable gallows made,
confidant that the King X he’d persuade
to let him hang M (as his wife was suggesting);
– that night, X was wakeful – instead of him resting,

he asked that the book of his reign they would bring –
they read how a plot on the life of the King
had been heard and reported by M, but that naught
had been done to show praise for assassins caught.

‘What shall be done for the one whom I ought
to honour’, the King asked, and H proudly thought
‘He must mean for me!’ and suggested he dress
that one in a robe, ride a royal king’s horse,

and lead him throughout all the city proclaiming
‘This man is honoured’ – H heard the king naming
M as the man who by H must be led
(not hung on his gallows, but favoured instead!).

When Esther made known the plot H had devised
to destroy all her people, X’s anger was roused,
H then fell upon her to plead for his life,
but X, when he thought H assaulting his wife,

grew even more angry – the gallows H made
was used for himself, and a lesson conveyed
that malice and pride, though they hate, will instead
one day bring their schemes down upon their own head!

based on the story of the book of Esther in the Bible (especially 2:19-8:17), when some of the Jews had been allowed to return to their land, but some were still in Persia.

He Pressed On, Though Knowing

He had to go to Calvary
to rescue me.
He travelled to Jerusalem
though knowing men
would there reject and crucify:
and he must die.

All we like sheep have gone astray,
he took away
the punishment deserved by sins,
and freedom brings –
as pierced by nails, he paid my fine:
and Life is mine.

He bore the penalty, and then
he lived again,
and met his friends as promised, they
told of his Way,
he will return soon, all shall see
his majesty.

Tune: 84 84 84 eg Wentworth by F C Maker, tune of ‘My God, I thank Thee, who hast made the earth so bright’

‘We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.’ Isaiah 53:8
‘From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things … that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.’
Matthew 16:21
