Truth revealed

Is truth immutable concealed, –
that sought-for, solid base?
or has a greater One revealed
real absolutes, in grace?
No other person knows my thought
unless explained and shared;
– God’s will can but by him be taught –
eternal Word declared.

The fear of God – a reverent awe –
foundation stone is this;
accepting standards of his law, –
our wisdom’s not amiss.
To aid we need enlightened hearts, –
wise tutor, Christ within;
for understanding he imparts:
perception of our sin.

God’s kindness still is vast and great
throughout the earth and skies:
for he’s the faithful Potentate
who life and health supplies.
His mystery of power and grace,
his love to fallen man,
sent Christ to take the sinner’s place:
see perfect wisdom’s span!

And soon all sad disease and pain
for ever will be gone,
and Jesus Christ will judge and reign,
and cleanse out all that’s wrong.
Please don’t search after something new, –
for where can truth be found?
In Christ, the Lord, what love we view:
his words and deeds astound!

The only stable foundation

Isaiah 8:20 &  9:13,16
As people of God we must trust in his Word
though all of society’s frightened, and stirred
by dangers and troubles, and seeking relief
from that which is false and will bring them but grief.

Political juggling may hurt and may fail,
and medical help prove of little avail.
All sorts of ideas, religions, may tempt, –
but then turn out worthless, deserving contempt.

For all who don’t speak as the Word of the Lord,
lack wisdom – frustrations will soon be outpoured,
resentment and anger to men and to God,
despair and distress at the ways of the world.

The people of God have a reverent fear
for he who is holy, their Saviour so dear
(who will bring in justice, and chastens for sin):
naught else need we fear if protected by him.

Christ Jesus: the shelter for all who are his,
our God who is with us; – but few value this,
though scorning his grace, they will soon see his power,
and witness his advent and conquering hour.
Tune: 11 11 11 11 eg How firm a  foundation (Montgomery by J Stanley)

Greater is he that is in you …

The devil lies, and tries to make
the Christian’s peace and trust to break,
but God protects, for Jesu’s sake.

And Jesus prays in heaven still,
and firmly holds his sheep, until
they leave this world, and meet no ill.

Believe and study all God’s Word,
you’ll own a shield and precious sword;
be strong, and fight with strength from God.

The devil’s power was broken when
Christ bore God’s wrath against our sin, –
soon Satan into fire he’ll fling.

The Foundation of Worship

Christ commands we listen, learn:
with his Spirit’s help discern
as we read his Word divine,
good instructions that refine
how we live and think and talk –
Christian character and walk.

Listening to those called to preach,
glad to learn – God’s Word they teach,
opening up the thrust and meaning,
and the Author’s will revealing.

That’s where worshipping must start:
attentive ear and humble heart.

Listening to preaching

It is not easy to retain
the knowledge, guidance that you gain
whenever preachers truth explain,
with unction Words of God proclaim.
So make a note and meditate,
make efforts firm to concentrate,
ignore the things that irritate,
and memorize, and meditate.

Be thankful for the teaching heard,
the truths exposed from God’s own Word;
don’t be distracted in your thought
to all that is not as it ought.

Be positive, and seek to gain
much profit, and all this retain
to help you persevere and walk
more sanctified in deeds and talk.
Tune: LMD eg Guidance by William B Bradbury

The Ten Commandments

(For children)
When we read God’s great commandments,
there his will for us is seen;
we have failed, we all are sinners:
only Christ can make us clean!

Worship God; don’t make an image;
never wrongly use his name;
don’t forget, keep Sunday holy;
honour parents, – bring no shame.

Do not kill; keep marriage honoured;
do not steal; and do not lie;
do not covet, do not envy; –
these are laws of God most high.

And the sum of all is loving:
loving God with all my heart;
loving other people also:
Christ gives grace such life to start.
