Come, pray …

Why scorn all thought of one great God?
a God who came to earth
as babe, and when a man, did good,
was kind. and taught the truth.

He understood amd welcomed all
– the Friend of sinners, He
helped those now sorry for their fall,
hated hypocrisy.

Just so He’ll gladly hear your prayer –
Ask Him to help you ‘see’
His Kingdom comes, soon everywhere
the world will bow the knee.

The four ‘means of grace’

cf Acts 2:

The Scriptures, God’s Words to hear and to read,
to keep safe from error – we grow as we ‘feed’;
rich fellowship – all those in Christ love and share,
encourage each other in faith, loving care.

The meal of remembrance we keep as He said,
remember His death with the wine and the bread:
reminder of how our salvation Christ won:
His church tells the world of what He has done.

And gather together to pray to our Lord,
He wants us to pray and to trust in His Word,
and also to pray on our own by his grace –
we’ve access through Christ to his ear and embrace.

Prayer on the long run

Life may be long – long-distance run;
prolonged may be the path begun.
We can grow slack, and unaware
of sloth in vital private prayer.

With thoughtfulness about kind deeds
when faced with many varied needs –
yet taking all to God to ask
he guide, give wisdom for each task.

We see the cares and troubles, sins
that life to neighbours daily brings,
and we ourselves experience such
so pray with empathetic touch.

Time with our Father as we pour
petitions, worshipping with awe,
and thrill to know participation
with him in building heavenly kingdom.

Mystery and Certainty

Unanswered (?) prayers

The Lord almighty wants our prayers –
part of his mighty way:
submissive to his will but still
we must see needs and pray.

Concerned and caring, noticing,
faithfully ask and plead
with faith in his great love and power,
– how good to intercede!

But will we always see him work?
– the ‘when’ and ‘how’ and ‘where’?
for of the full extent of all
he does we’re not aware.

So ‘Why’ an answer’s slow to see
we may not know, must trust
that he is working, bids us pray,
and all he does is just.

Persevere and Pray

No human wisdom is enough
to help us when the way is tough.
The best of human leaders fail,
but One has power that can avail,
and has resources limitless:
approach him, pray in your distress.

Our leaders and we each one need
to persevere and intercede
and ask God’s mercy, intervention
in many a desperate situation,
and ask He guide how we proceed
and strengthen for the tasks, we plead.

Tune: 88 88 88

on the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven so holy,
may many more honour you wholly,
your good kingdom come,
your perfect will done
on earth, as in heaven, more fully.

We pray for our needs that are daily
so varied and sometimes our folly
brings need of your grace,
and tender embrace
– please pardon, for sins we are sorry.

We will not ourselves be unwilling
to exercise mercy, forgiving
each other, we need
that you wisely lead,
upheld in the troubles of living.

So help us the pitfalls, temptation
to see and avoid, give protection
from Satan’s designs,
his malice and crimes,
his subtle, perverting intention.

on Psalm 28

With hate in heart,
they speak of peace.
don’t care to ask
for mercy, grace.
But I do ask –
don’t close your ear –
I’ll share their fate
if you don’t hear.

But those with no
regard for what
God thinks, don’t want
these gifts he’s got.
My heart exults –
you’ve heard my call:
my Shepherd carries,
me through all.

Draw in, and save
a people who
will be your own,
and love you too.
Though hated, I’m
inseparable
from Fortress strong,
impregnable.

“Since they show no regard for the works of the LORD and what his hands have done, he will tear them down and never build them up again. Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy. … my heart leaps for joy …be their shepherd and carry them for ever.” Psalm 28: 5-9

Tune:88 88

on Psalm 130

When desperate, to Jesus call,
for nothing else can help at all:
don’t want to quit, give up, so cry –
‘I need Your help if I’m to try
to persevere. I see no way
to overcome – and need to pray.

‘I don’t deserve good to receive;
mercy I ask – I know I grieve
You every day, and You alone
may pardon give, for sin atone.
We know one day You will come back,
all will be good, we’ll nothing lack.

‘I wait that dawn, and know Your love
will never fail, and leads above.
Your word gives hope, and there I place
my trust, and wait all promised grace.
My sins You have all wiped away,
my tears You will wipe clear one day.’

Tune: 88 88 88

Remembering

While men invade, and loot, oppress,
there will be times of war,
but then in war’s confusing mess,
misjudgments, hate occur.

And often wars become log-jammed,
and none can see a way
to bring back justice to the land,
– some turn to God and pray

an overruling providence,
to somehow turn the tide,
and heal the hatred by his grace
that peace once more abide.

As we remember lives so brave,
the sacrifice and pain,
we praise God for the times he’s saved,
and answered prayers again.

We pray for those so hurt by hate,
need help to cope, live on,
and pray he will men’s schemes frustrate,
when evil is begun.

Be filled with the Spirit

e filled with the Spirit
Filled not with stupefying drink,
but with the Spirit of our God
for him to mould us, grow his fruit,
and help us witness to his Word,
prepared to love and serve his church,
empowered in prayer, to worship stirred.
So daily come to Christ, and drink,
confessing and forsaking sin,
cleansed, consecrated, to his will
submitting, set apart for him;
and ask, receive him constantly,
and see him work, the coming King.

Filled not with stupefying drink,
but with the Spirit of our God
for him to mould us, grow his fruit,
and help us witness to his Word,
prepared to love and serve his church,
empowered in prayer, to worship stirred.

So daily come to Christ, and drink,
confessing and forsaking sin,
cleansed, consecrated, to his will
submitting, set apart for him;
and ask, receive him constantly,
and see him work, the coming King.
