I know where I’m going!

I’m journeying on towards home,
where fullness of blessing is found;
though often I long to fly on,
I’m treading this life’s barren ground.
To stay I’m resigned, for I find
for now there is work to be done.
A pilgrimage on to that place
upheld by his comforting grace.

To all that I meet I must say,
‘My Father’s preparing a home¬’
‘Don’t dither, join Jesus today’.
You’ll never regret once begun.
While here now, my task is to ask:
to win some will sweeten my way.
A pilgrimage on to that place
upheld by his comforting grace.

And sometimes the journey seems slow,
I’ll surely arrive there one day.
What distance there is still to go
now none but my Father can say.
And so I’ll invite to life’s Light! –
my God now and always to know!
A pilgrimage on to that place
upheld by his comforting grace.

Tune: 88 88 88 88 eg Trewen by David E Evans, tune of ‘A sovereign protector I have’

This is based on an old Welsh hymn ‘‘Tuag adref ‘r wyf yn teithio’ (Towards home I am travelling) by O R Owen

While there is time …

“My times are in your hands’*
– the One outside of time
who total power commands
and sees the whole time-line.

He stepped into earth’s time
as human come to save
by death, though still divine,
brought life beyond the grave.

Time will no longer bind
one ‘day’ – eternity:
we all will live to find
that awesome certainty.

So now we have this time
to learn the truth of all;
and heaven will soon be mine
if for his grace I call.

*Psalm 31:15 Tune: 66 66 iambic

Demons shudder

(James 2:19)
People laugh at fear of sprites,
ghosts or ghouls, and all such frights…
do they ever really wonder
is there anyone powerful, kinder
who is really in control
of the unknown powers all?

Jesus cast out spirits evil
who were plaguing and were cruel,
and he rescues those who’ve found
they’re in misery now bound
gives his presence, peace and pardon –
all the battles have been won!

Each who in their coffin lies
certainly one day will rise
not to flit around this place
but one day the Christ to face
when he’ll finally complete
all that’s evil’s full defeat.
Tune: 77 77 77 eg England’s Lane tune of’ Sing, O sing, this blessed morn! Unto us a Child is born’

Grief and Comfort

Death, bereavement, loss and sadness
emptiness and change and chill;
though if the memories of who’s departed stir up thanks
the mourning isn’t gloom, and can encourage still
to hope and effort, vision , work,
and grief is lightened by the pearls of gladness
and we are more committed duties not to shirk.

And if the hope of life eternal
is shared by one who’s gone before
and those who mourn the passing,
their joy combines with all the sense of loss,
for frailty, sickness, weakness here
are now transformed into the life that has no tears
and will continue for eternal years …

Jesus appears to John, cAD90

He is, and was, and is to come,
the First and Last, the Living One,
was dead, alive now evermore
and holds the keys of death’s hard door.

John, at His awesome presence shook,
His voice, was like a rushing brook,
His face as brilliant as the sun,
his words cut through all lies and sham.

And by His blood we’re fully freed
from all our sins; He loves, He’ll lead .
As priests we can come near, and be
God’s kingdom, serving joyfully.

Tune: LM eg Niagara by Robert Jackson, tune of ‘ The LORD is King!’

“… They will not sweep over you.” (Isaiah 43:2)

Flood and storms can pound and shake me,
who can hold my head above?
Faithful Brother won’t forsake me,
demonstrated covenant love
bearing for me crucifixion,
Friend preserves in dire affliction.

And when crossing death’s dark river,
He’ll be always by my side;
glancing at Him, strong Life-Giver,
heart uplifted, joy supplied:
songs reminding of the haven
glorious waiting home in heaven.

Guaranteed Hope

King Jesus holds out hope
that’s guaranteed by God:
when sliding on a slippery slope,
listen to loving Word.

Know help each day to cope,
cherish sure goal ahead,
King Jesus brings us certain hope
– the Saviour is not dead!

Lowly his birth, so he
could meet all, teach, and then
our perfect Substitute would be
to wash us clean again.

God over all came here
unfailing hope to give
through everything he’s always near –
with him we’ll ever live!
[Tune: SM]

Sure hope of a world free from …

Our world has beauty,
but viruses ravage;
much love and kindness,
but sins hurt and damage.
Our world is sustained,
provisioned, protected,
its Maker is caring,
though scorned and rejected.

He’s wise to warn us,
instructing our ignorance;
he tells of judgement,
but also deliverance,
revealing mercy,
love, pardon – abundance:
his rule acknowledge,
with truthful repentance.

A new beginning
with viruses, hatred
removed – we’re longing
that such be created.
But could we go there
without contributing
ill tempers fouling
that new place polluting?

King Jesus came here
as baby – he only
could live life perfect
– unique in all history,
so he would suffer
as substitute for us,
and we could be cleansed for
that place with no virus.

Bow to the King of the Universe

Christ’s Spirit now convicts to turn
from mutiny against the King
– the King Creator most men spurn
though we should bow the knee to him.
O come, O come and find the one true King
Who’ll wrap you in his care, forgive your sin.

He made the universe, and he
the Supernatural Source whose might
the photons, order that we see
created – all was perfect, right.
O come, O come  …

Until the mutiny began
and some protection he withdrew,
now calls to every woman, man
to turn, repent, ask help anew.
O come, O come  …

And one day he will come again
and put away the pain and death,
and root out sin, remove all shame
to people then his perfect earth.
O come, O come  …

Tune: 88 88 10 10 iambic eg Veni Emmanuel (O come, O come, Emmanuel)

We need a new earth

There’s wars and violence, malice, lies,
and international tensions rise,
misused resources (blame those guys?)
but no-one’s faultless, fully wise.

However much our world puts right
pollution, wars, can’t clear all blight –
the earth is aging, cannot last,
and all our days are flying fast.

God came as Jesus to our earth:
no doubt about it, or his worth.
He said he’d come to free from hate,
fit for a new earth – trust and wait!
