Scorning the warning

‘Put Micaiah in the prison.’
(For his warning Ahab spurned.)
‘Give him only bread and water,
until safely I’ve returned.’

‘I will go disguised to battle,
then the other king they’ll shoot
(royally robed) – the enemy realised
he was not King Ahab, but

someone drew his bow at random,
Ahab’s schemed disguise no use
pierced between the armour pieces:
he’d been warned his life he’d lose.

Hopefully Micaiah was not
left in prison! God controls
even random acts, so heed the
words of love of Him who knows.

Muck-Rakers

A scoundrel lacking principles
delights to dig out vice
exposing, pushing into view,
turn minds to what’s not nice.

Unhealthy fascination with
such evil and then glad
to see destructive influence
of details sad and bad.

He is a verbal arsonist,
it’s difficult to quench,
extinguish scarring fires – don’t play
keep right away from stench!

Proverbs 16:27 An ungodly man digs up evil,
and it is on his lips like a burning fire.

Two Contests

In place of armies’ warring slaughter,
each should choose one man to fight,
theirs was nine feet tall, in armour
– who could ever match his might?

Then young David came – much slighter
but convinced his God could aid.
Goliath scorned this little fighter –
who slung a stone – Goliath died.

As a shepherd, God had helped him
when a bear attacked the sheep,
knew his God whom they were mocking
would His promises still keep.

Baal’s false prophets got no answer
even though they screamed and danced,
but despite the pools of water,
Elijah’s God sent fire when asked.

1 Samuel 17 & 1 Kings 18

Opened to show He’s gone!

When Christ was taken from the cross
his body was not dumped or lost,
nor in communal graveyard tossed,
among the many there amassed.

As prophesied, a rich man’s tomb
was where his body, dead, was borne,
but on the third day’s early morn
the stone-door from its seals was torn.

An angel came (the soldiers quake
they see him roll it, feel earth shake):
an open grave to show Christ gone.
death could not hold the mighty Son.

Freed to Free

Transaction crucial on the cross
and willingly allowed – for us!
He then returns from death’s hold freed
to freedom give from gloom and need.

The angels gaze amazed to see
this love for those in misery –
to those refusing the true King
such Gift and love he’s offering.

The Source and Origin of all
came as a babe to show, fulfil
solution planned for those who’d messed
the world, their lives now much distressed.

Praise, peace, palms and hatred

As prophesied, the peaceful King
into Jerusalem rides in
upon a colt, untrained and humble
but some are jealous, angry, grumble:
they ask He stop the praise and cheer,
but Jesus says, ‘If so, you’d hear
the very stones cry out in praise’ –
a rock-band truly to amaze!

Some wanted him to conquer now,
but didn’t understand just how
there then would be no time to turn
from heedlessness to hear, return;
for all had need to come to Him
leave lives of selfish greed and sin,
and so He now was calling all –
repent, ask grace, for mercy call.

But others hated, could not bear
His honest godliness, nor care
to teach God’s way to all the poor,
their own advance wished to procure
pretending to serve God, they laid
such heavy burdens that dismayed
the honest folk who wanted grace,
but Jesus showed God’s gracious face..

Why? What For?

How could He die? – and why?
Why let them mock and crucify?
They didn’t know it was for greater good.
His agonies – much deeper than they understood –
would earn the pardon-gift to give
– and soon He’d rise and supervise
the proclamation of redemption.

In heaven until He’ll all fulfil
return the reigning King
and all will honour Him.

Don’t doubt, and wait
to see Him come
– too late
to then believe, receive.

Do not steal – what

Do you want what isn’t yours?
Grabbing by deceit or force?
Do I cling to what I have,
loth to share, and slow to give?

Judas was a thief and greedy.
Jesus gave and served the needy.
Ants are busy, store ahead.
Sluggards rather stay in bed.

I’m a steward of gifts divine –
things I own aren’t really ‘mine’.
Will I labour, greed forsake,
glad when giving, slow to take?

Nothing paid for stealing’s gain
– someone, somewhere feels the pain,
profiting at their expense
you will owe them recompense.

Folly forsakes the foundation

Foundational truth
from which wisdom flows
is knowledge and reverence
of the Being who knows
the compass of truth,
how all things began –
our earth and the stars:
through time he can scan.

He sees minds that doubt,
deny that he is,
won’t carefully ponder –
worst folly is this
presuming there’s no-one
far greater than we,
ignoring the prophets
and Christ’s purity

‘In all his thoughts there is no room for God. Psalm 10:4 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10

Wisdom is too high for a fool. Proverbs 24::7a
