Like Sheep

Wandering far for lusher grass,
sheep cannot give thought
to the bogs and pits they pass
where they could get caught.

Need a Shepherd to control,
where they drift and roam,
and we too can vaguely stroll
where temptations come.

With compassion, Jesus saw
the harassed crowd in need.
Shepherd wise with truth to help
safely lead and feed.

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9:36,37
Tune:75 75

Bow to the King of the Universe

Christ’s Spirit now convicts to turn
from mutiny against the King
– the King Creator most men spurn
though we should bow the knee to him.
O come, O come and find the one true King
Who’ll wrap you in his care, forgive your sin.

He made the universe, and he
the Supernatural Source whose might
the photons, order that we see
created – all was perfect, right.
O come, O come  …

Until the mutiny began
and some protection he withdrew,
now calls to every woman, man
to turn, repent, ask help anew.
O come, O come  …

And one day he will come again
and put away the pain and death,
and root out sin, remove all shame
to people then his perfect earth.
O come, O come  …

Tune: 88 88 10 10 iambic eg Veni Emmanuel (O come, O come, Emmanuel)

Something better …

Blighted partying and violence,
frustration breeding selfishness,
think anarchy brings happiness,
but joy flows out of godliness.

Satan blinds, brings misery,
Satan lies, brings poverty,
you don’t believe you were created
for the joy in him located.

Created in God’s image, so
we can find kindly things to do,
selflessness is satisfying
and God’s friendship stimulating.

Turn repentantly to him,
pardoned, life renewed begin,
anger quenched and glad to bring
help to others suffering.

“Repent and believe the good news”

Away from all that’s wrong and harms,
turn back to God, his welcoming arms.
Good news! he’s drawing near to save –
repent, receive, his words believe,

The kingdom, rule of Christ is here,
he came to teach of love and fear,
he came to take the punishment
of all who would receive, repent.

The time is now, Jesus still calls,
there’s so much news that grieves, appals,
but he brought news that’s truly good.
Don’t miss the blessings of this Word.

A tax collector, fishermen
perceived the truth and followed him
to learn the message – later on
they’d take it out to everyone.
Tune: LM

Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said, “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:14,15

Close the Gap!

How easily we drift
or take offence at those
we used to care for, growing rift
– it’s hard the gap to close.

Some may be many miles
apart or overseas,
but that’s not what has stilled the smiles
and hindered former ease.

Who was it then to blame?
Don’t really need to know.
Longings remain to see again
how they are faring now.

If there’s a God, what rift
there is between us two,
and only He has got the gift
to draw me near, make new.

The faults are on my side,
– in Christ he can forgive
then help me to be reconciled
with people that I grieve.

Tune: SM

Finding the Real Christ

If your fears, frustrations fester
lift your heart to prayer for faith
– not a mindless, empty ritual –
finding One who rules the earth.

Read about his interventions –
speaking, coming as a man,
teaching of his real dominion,
who this universe began.

Come in prayer for he invites you,
but come humbly, honestly,
and prepared to turn from what he
shows is wrong, repentantly.

Would you really go on claiming
all you see is meaningless?
and ignore the Christ amazing
who spoke hope and righteousness?

Tune: 87 87 trochaic eg Sussex, tune of ‘May the grace of Christ our Saviour’

Whatever the mess

John 4: 1-42

Relationships many – her life was a mess,
found Jesus knew all and seemed willing to bless –
returned to the town to tell people this must
be surely Messiah, the Saviour to trust.

They went out to find him, to meet him and hear
his teaching and knowledge – and soon it was clear
that Jesus was Saviour: Samaritans, Jews
and Gentiles – for all he’d astounding good news!
Tune: 11 11 11 11

Purpose

You youth who feel life meaningless –
told chance rules all, no grace to bless,
and crumbling morals brings distress
– such lies can easily depress.

You know that money, or its lack
does not bring satisfaction back.
You know there is a higher power
with skill that has designed a flower.

You know that kindness warms, is real,
when shown to you, or when you feel
such pleasure in self-sacrifice
and joy in trying to be nice.

So read of Jesus, what he did
and all the amazing things he said.
Yes, God designed the flower – we can
now know Him for he came as man.

Tune: LM eg Church Triumphant (tune of ‘I know that my Redeemer lives’)

Contentment or contempt

The showers of blessings refresh grateful souls
– absorbed like the rain when it onto earth falls,
but hearts that are hardened don’t let blessings in –
like ducks’ backs and rocks that just brush away rain.

Contempt for the blessings God’s goodness supplies
will wither the soul, just as greed will despise
provisions provided for needs and relief,
and crave for the coveted things that bring grief.

The children of Israel were tempted to cry,
forgetting the slavery – the different supply
of food they had left there they longed for – distrust,
impatience, ingratitude filled them with lust.

Tune: 11 11 11 11

A question for the accusers

To Jesus they brought
this one they had caught
in breaking the law –
Christ came to restore
those sorry for sin,
so they could begin
a new life with Him,
empowered within.

For her they did not
have care, not a jot,
their aim was to trip
make Jesus to slip,
so they could detect
for law disrespect,
and undermine grace
that covers disgrace.

They all crept away,
for no-one could say
he’d never done wrong
through all his life long.
Hypocrisy, pride
can other sins hide.
The test had spun round –
and what had they found?

He didn’t condone,
nor did he condemn;
his mission to save,
and now can forgive
if guilt we admit
desiring to quit,
rebellion to leave;
repent and receive.
Tune: 10 10 10 10 but can be sung to some 10 10 11 11 tunes eg

“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8:7
