Amazing Grace!

Grace, powerful, undeserved:
the favour, gifts of God –
though all we do he has observed,
our every word has heard,
he’s made a way of grace
and now he can embrace
repentant ones who truly come
asking he will atone
their sins by Christ’s spilt blood,
receiving grace from God:
listen! to all he says, believe
and life and grace receive.

Then may grace always lead us,
adoption undeserved –
by grace his teaching feed us,
be powerfully preserved.
He is the Gardener
who makes us holier,
he prunes away those things
those foolish harmful sins
by which we’ve been deceived,
his holy love have grieved:
listen! to all he says, believe
and life and grace receive.

Jesus said “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

Fit to meet the King

No other way to God
if Jesus is refused;
God has provided him as such,
and so if he’s abused,
there is no other way
that we can be made fit
to come to One so holy, pure
dressed in a clean outfit.

To meet a king you should
be tidy, clean, polite:
to meet the universe’s King
your life must be made right.
But that means all your past
that’s wrong must be wiped clean,
and gain new attitude of heart
where selfishness has been.

But only God, as Christ
could die to clear our guilt,
and give us life that loves his ways –
all through his own blood spilt.
No other route to God –
kind Jesus is the Way!
so turn to him for cleansing, life
repent and humbly pray.
Tune: DSM eg Diademata tune of ‘Crown him with many crowns’ by G Elvey

Open House

No room in the inn for the birth of the child,
will you give him room? with your God reconciled,
and hope he has room for you there in his heaven?
acknowledging, asking your sins be forgiven?

There’s room in his heaven for all who perceive
their guilt, now desiring his grace to receive,
redeemed by the price that he paid on the cross
in dying for sinners repentant like us.

So open the door of your heart, let him in
– the Saviour, your Maker, the almighty King.
There’s room in his arms now to shelter and shield
and feed with the nourishing truth he’s revealed.

Tune: 11 11 11 11 eg ‘Away in a manger’, or Houghton

“The Fool says … ‘There is no God’”

“The fool says in his heart,
‘There is no God’”.*
He cannot know, but must
boldy discard
the thought of something greater
than what we see, all matter.
A God would intervene, he says,
at once to make things better.

So two things he neglects –
how life began,
and what a God would do
with sinful man:
If he make all work perfectly,
with no more germs or tragedy,
would we all live harmoniously
and kindly neighbours, brothers, be?

Or should he (as he says)
some trouble leave and offer help and hope
awhile – his help and hope
we can receive –
while showing how we need to be
all changed so fundamentally,
forgiven, before he come and cleanse
all germs and sin out thorougly. *Psalm 14:1; 53:1

Much more startling…

The shepherds saw a startling sight,
but the sight they went to see
– the little baby born that night
they realised now was he
who had a glorious past
and a future which would last and last … !
Awesome the angels in the night;
far greater awe when Christ they saw.

Those men with riches travelled far
to worship this new King;
they knew the meaning of the star
and came to worship him.
So humble now was he
but soon his glory all will see.
Awesome their wealth, and journey long;
they worship, bow to Jesus now!

Distracting gifts, and glitzy noise
– you may this mystery miss:
his lifting gift, taste bliss –
not just a pretty story
but tells us of the door to glory!
Awesome to know this God-child will
suffer, redemption to fulfil.

Wait, Go, Tell!

What a task for group so weak:
God will send them out to speak.
Hostile world has not yet heard
news they may feel is absurd.
What a message they must tell
news that all things can be well
All repentant can receive
grace Christ died and rose to give.

Jesus said they must not go
’til his Spirit come – they’ll know
his infilling; – ’til that day
weak disciples wait and pray.
As a rushing wind he came,
like anointing tongues of flame.
Babel brought such separations,
Word of Christ unites the nations.

So we see the change He made,
boldly they his will obeyed
see them needy people reach,
of his resurrection teach.
By the Spirit, hearts that heard
Christians telling out God’s Word
came to life now, sin abhorred,
contrite, pardoned by the Lord.

New believers met for they
hungry to learn of God’s Way,
caring, mutual love display,
and together praise and pray.
What a message they must tell
news that all things can be well
All repentant can receive
grace Christ died and rose to give.

Acts chapters one and two in the Bible

Tune: 77 77 77 77 eg Humility by John Goss (tune fo ‘See amid the winter’s snow’)

Freed from prison

King Herod killed James, and had Peter arrested.
The Christians still prayed to their God whom they trusted.
By sixteen men guarded and chained – but he slept,
‘Get up’, said the angel: Peter thought that he dreamt.

He rose and obeyed him and off the chains fell,
the gateway then opened by God’s mighty will.
He hurried to where they were meeting in prayer.
He knocked, Rhoda came but then ran back to share.

They couldn’t believe her that it could be he.
James now was in heaven but Peter was free
to preach out the news of salvation and peace,
and Satan’s frustrated at Peter’s release.
cf Acts 12:

Tune: 11 11 11 11 or Houghton (10 10 11 110)

Rejecting — what?

from Psalm 36
Deceive themselves with flattery
do not detect their sins
devising schemings murky, sly
rejecting good, wise things.

And why? because they have no thought
of God who is and knows,
no fear of penalty if caught,
respect that wisdom owes.

And yet, your love O LORD is great,
complete your faithfulness,
your justice deep we contemplate,
eternal righteousness.

And you give shelter and preserve
give life, a feast, and light
though none of us could this deserve
we drink from your delight.

Continue then this love to those
who know you, with true heart,
protected from the proud who chose
from your grace to depart.

Getting the treasure

Parable about God’s kingdom:
like a treasure in a field;
someone learns where it is hidden,
where it’s buried well-concealed.

So he goes to sell his assets –
everything he owns must go
so that he the field can purchase
for the hoard that lies below.

If we realise what amazing
benefits there are with God,
nothing else is worth pursuing –
we must find that precious hoard.

Make our peace and ask his pardon,
nothing value more than him,
all subservient to the kingdom:
blessed in service of the King.

For the treasure none can gather
or appreciate its store,
but the ones who know the Father,
in his kingdom evermore.

Tune: 87 87 eg ‘All for Jesus’ by John Stainer

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” Matthew 13:44

Fact truths, or ideas

“There are no absolutes”
– some say:
“just choose whatever suits
– today.
Be happy in your chosen way
and live life as invented play.”

It doesn’t alter truth
– a jot.
For whether you like it so
– or not
distorting truth may just prompt sneers
but facts are lost to vain ideas.

You may choose what you like
to trust.
But check what Jesus said
– don’t just
assume that you can well afford
to leave his words unread, ignored.

There is a God, he does
exist –
sent messages to us
whose gist
is grace and love, he sees our mess
shows how we can escape distress.
