A foretold gamble

An idle gamble, careless toss,
while Christ was pierced upon the cross:
these both were long ago foretold
by God, by whom all is controlled.

Though not yet ending, by his breath
all evil, malice, pain and death,
the miracles and resurrection of his Son
encourge (warn) — those bitter things will soon be gone.

‘This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said ot one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happend that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”’ John 19:23,24  and Psalm 22 esp. v.18

The Defeat of the Archetype

A spirit of the Great King’s court,
had mutinied, sedition taught,
and sought to cause much trouble, fear,
amongst the subjects; he would steer
them from the rule and care so kind,
and make them of rebellious mind;
but soon they found their master new
a harsh slave-driver, monster too
– the only way they could be freed
was if the King’s own Son agreed
to take him on, fight to the death,
– the guilty then could have new birth,
be freed from this tyrannical rule,
and realise they’d each been a fool,
and glad to find they could return,
receive acquittal none could earn
and what is more, the battle won,
he lives forever, their Saviour-Son.

The most important world events

Many philosophies, only one
where God himself stepped into history;
many killings, but only one
immortal person died, a mystery;
many injustices, but only One
sinless, suffered crucifixion,
many claims but only One
foretold, displayed his resurrection.
Only one such momentous sequence –
events that brought to millions
far-reaching consequence,
eternal relevance.

What is a church?

(not a building)
That place of stone with vaulted ceilings high,
and spire that points up to the sky
may sober and subdue our mood,
but will not of itself give warmth and food
to help our spirit’s sadness,
or lift our hearts in gladness,
and worship to the King.

If there, or in a country hut
there gather those whose joy is great,
(and love), to pause and listen to a liberating word,
then that can touch us, spirits helped and stirred.

That ‘church’ word doesn’t really mean a place,
or building, but the people drawn by grace
to follow, hear and worship and believe,
– the people, family who choose to leave
the path that walks away from Him,
and everywhere they go they praise their King.

and when they meet together on this earth,
their company will always be a place of worship and of worth.

“Greet also the church that meets at their house.” Romans 16:5
“To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those every where who call on the name of our Lor Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 1:2

Reliable words!

God of truth,  he cannot lie; –
on his Words we can rely, –
necessary, full supply:
Bible, perfect truth.

Satan, father of all lies –
cunning, crafty, clever, tries
by deceit men’s hearts to seize
from God’s words of truth.

Every day we talk a lot.
So much we can speak about!
God considers, – never doubt!
Purify your speech!

Do not gossip, slander, bear
witness false, but speak with care
what is right and true; don’t share
idle words unkind.

Men don’t always want to hear
truth; for truth will interfere
with their lies, but have no fear
truth will be made known.

For my failings I repent,
trust in Christ, with discontent
at my past, pray grace be sent
to help me purge my sin.

1 January, again

The clock is ticking on …
the climax is foretold,
the world is winding down,
– like us, it’s getting old,
and, entering this year of grace,
its unknown pathways we can face,
supported in the darkest place,
with prayer for help to be of use,
and opportunities embrace.

Jesus clears away the additions to scripture

He spoke to the needy and lost,
and witnessed whatever the cost,
not harshly to stir into hate, –
but they killed him outside of the gate.

Their system of rules he refused,
– their rules had made many confused;
the Scriptures that God had revealed
beneath human rules were concealed.

True meaning of Scripture they missed,
else they would have welcomed, and kissed
the Son, but they hated his claim,
rejecting his wonderful name.

Tune: 88 88 (anapaestic?)

David learns, and perseveres

King David, choice of God for ruling,
his people leading many years;
composer, singing psalms appealing,
revealing faith he’d learnt in tears.

Whatever causes of his turmoil:
his sin, his troubles, scheming Saul:
however low, he’d still in prayer toil,
and on the Lord of promise call.

For laying hold of all God’s promised, –
see: that’s how David struggled up, –
a way of grace his God had furnished, –
the Lord himself would drink the cup.

And all his failings he acknowledged;
for his repentance was sincere.
He trusted, pleaded: God provided
assurance, peace, removed his fear.
