Authority

“All authority in heaven
and on earth to Me is given”.
While on earth, Jesus, the Lord
food created, sight restored.
As He taught – men were astonished –
with authority admonished,
and the Way of grace conveyed
– repentance, faith must be displayed.

Ostentatious leaders found
their verbal traps He could confound.
Satan could not make him sin.
Satan’s sway was crumbling.
Still on earth, Christ’s Spirit stirs
minds to see through Satan’s slurs
and one day this King will come –
then His rule we all will own.

Search for the King: to worship, scorn, or kill?

The Wise Men searched and travelled far
because they saw the wonder Star:
wanted to find the newborn King
whose coming must great good news bring!

So joyful when they saw once more
the star – now led them to the door,
the house wherein the child was found
and then they fell upon the ground.

For this child, though now young was he
whom they must lift up, worship – see
they then gave gifts, and thus provision
which met the needs of flight: protection.

**********************

But Herod’s search was not to bring
praise, No! he feared another king,
and thought to thwart, confound God’s will
– the child when found, destroy and kill.

And some today, search, find, adore,
in love their lives He’ll save, restore.
But others want false freedom more –
search ways Him to deny, ignore.

But He is Sovereign, and one day
we all will see His rule’s display.
He’ll know who His dominion own,
and those He sadly must disown.

Unhappy

Haunted by
hated hasty acts:
regrets, remorse.

Hunted by the “Hound
of heaven*”:
return,
repent,
relief.

Hungry for
real happiness,
and righteousness:
receive,
revived

How?

There was a beginning
– not Big Bang (– of what?)
A true God – the true God
made all, out of nought.

The theory of Big Bang
has problems immense;
a Super Designer
makes surely more sense!

All know there is Someone
who’s greater than us,
and that He can help us
get out of this mess!

He was at beginning
but came here in time,
was touched, and accepted
as man and divine.

Wow! and How?

All things bright and beautiful
all flowers, butterflies,
apples, oaks and humming birds,
and pink and orange skies.

‘Oh, Wow’ we say with wonder,
amazement in our eyes,
our hearts are warmed and ponder
the many ‘How’s and ‘Why’s.
All things …

Some thought there must be beings
whose spite they must appease,
but surely such could never
create a world to please?
All things …

The One true God all powerful
and good has told that He
created all this universe,
and now calls you and me.
All things …

But some don’t want that Master
and claim that chance has wrought
such excellence of wonder
from chaos out of nought!
All things …

Tune: ‘A’ll things bright” by William Monk’

Use it well!

God made me an ear
and with it I hear
such music, friends’ speech.
Do I listen, consider
remember and ponder
when God’s Words men preach?

God made me an eye –
such beauty I spy
but also can read:
I’ve books and the best
with which I am blest
is God’s words to heed.

So glad of my ear
with which I can hear,
– rejecting the bad,
but listen with care
to troubles friends share,
and words of my God.

The God who made ears
my every word hears –
do I speak as I should?
Your Spirit, I pray
to cleanse all I say,
so it may do good.

Does he who planted the ear, not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?Psalm 94:9
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Revelation 2:7

‘Useless Useful’ becomes Useful!

Onesimus ran from the home where he lived
– a slave to a master whose good care he’d grieved.
The master had recently come to believe,
Onesimus absconded, deciding to leave.

But somehow, far off, he met Paul who was chained,
and then he accepted the gospel explained,
a comfort and helper to Paul he became,
but knew he should go face Philemon’s just claim.

Paul wrote to Philemon, commending this slave
come now as a brother for him to forgive.
Paul offered to pay if some money had gone,
though Paul had brought Christ’s Word of Life to their home.

The name of ‘Onesimus’ means ‘useful’, and Paul
reflects how Philemon can clearly recall
how useless a servant he’d been, but made new:
now useful, a ‘brother’, dependable true.
Tune: 11 11 11 11 eg Montgomery, tune of ‘How firm a foundation’

see Paul’s letter to Philemon in the Bible.

[We’re saddened by slavery, yet it existed
everywhere once, though often consisted
of kindly provision, with limits and end –
no other provision for poverty found,
though conquerors sometimes were harsh enslavers;
but when there developed an evil vile trade
with greed, degradation, and neighbours betrayed
and cruel conditions inhuman and bestial
some bravely exposed, fought and won
the end of forced slavery, and the cruelty done,
though still there are those who find unkind ways
to hide such bad treatment in our days.]

Beware! Wolves!

They mock the grace of God
– confusion. baseless lies –
ignore the answers good,
articulate and wise.
And if with words we can’t contend,
our lives can yet the truth defend.

Our lives will truth display,
His grace and love and might
fed in his Word each day
we grow, reflect His light:
built up in Him, none can deny
His work in us is real, no lie.

So by the Spirit pray
to see where error lies.
Keep in His love, obey,
awaiting the surprise
when Jesus Christ returns one day
to take you home with Him to stay
.

Can be sung to ‘Adoration’ by William Havergal, tune of ‘Join all the glorious names’ 666688

Contend earnestly for the faith … mockers in the last time … build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit … Jude 3,18, 20

Wait, Go, Tell!

What a task for group so weak:
God will send them out to speak.
Hostile world has not yet heard
news they may feel is absurd.
What a message they must tell
news that all things can be well
All repentant can receive
grace Christ died and rose to give.

Jesus said they must not go
’til his Spirit come – they’ll know
his infilling; – ’til that day
weak disciples wait and pray.
As a rushing wind he came,
like anointing tongues of flame.
Babel brought such separations,
Word of Christ unites the nations.

So we see the change He made,
boldly they his will obeyed
see them needy people reach,
of his resurrection teach.
By the Spirit, hearts that heard
Christians telling out God’s Word
came to life now, sin abhorred,
contrite, pardoned by the Lord.

New believers met for they
hungry to learn of God’s Way,
caring, mutual love display,
and together praise and pray.
What a message they must tell
news that all things can be well
All repentant can receive
grace Christ died and rose to give.
