True to the Lord

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Acts 11:23
True to the Lord – to Jesus Christ, your Saviour,
True to the Lord – to Jesus Christ, your Lord,
True to the Lord – lean on his gracious favour,
according to his Word.

True to the Lord, with firm and fixed intention.
True to the Lord, – so purpose in your heart.
True to the Lord – who else can give salvation?
– eternal life impart?

True to the Lord, for strength to face temptation,
True to the Lord – abide in Christ, the Vine,
True to the Lord, with full determination,
– all needed grace is mine!

True to the Lord, and search the scriptures daily,
True to the Lord – learn of him from his Word,
True to the Lord – believe, obey more fully,
– a servant of the Lord!

True to the Lord – so let his Spirit fill you,
True to the Lord – and speak of Christ to all.
True to the Lord – see others long for God too,
and for his mercy call!

Praise

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Hebrews 13:15,16
Recreated by God’s Holy Spirit to be
to the praise of his glorious grace;
and the fruit of true praise should be borne from those lips
which confess him and know his embrace.
Sacrificially giving God praise,
praise for all that he is and his ways;
will you give time and thought
to give praise as you ought?
through Christ Jesus continually praise.

And this fruit is produced when we study his Word,
when we meditate, realise, agree
with the facts there recorded to teach us that God
great and glorious always will be.

And the names of our God and his Christ teach us much
of his attributes, nature and ways.
He is holy, and loving, and just, and so good;
– for his wise, gracious actions give praise.

God almighty deserves all the effort we can
give to offering thanks, giving praise.
We can never atone for our sins, but receive
his salvation, and grace all our days.

Sanctification and Discipline

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Hebrews 12:5–11
If God’s Holy Spirit has made you an heir,
a son by adoption, Christ’s glory to share;
if justified, welcomed, forgiven all sin, –
your sanctification by God will begin.
Glorious work! Glorious work! God’s omnipotent plan!
Glorious work! Glorious work! God redeems sinful man!

So do not lose heart when God’s dealings seem hard,
we would not be sons if his training were spared.

It truly you’re his, then chastisement expect,
for God must instruct and rebuke to perfect;
and such will be painful, the purging is sore,
but leaves us more gentle and meek than before.

God is not inflicting the due for our sins,
for Christ paid that penalty – mercy he brings;
but God will correct, and will train, and will test,
preparing a people to enter his rest.

And do not be cross, do not criticize God,
whenever you wince at the sting of his rod,
for wise is his providence, perfect his plan,
and he will complete what in us he began.

And learn what he’s teaching, and pray, and submit;
you must be made ready for heaven, made fit;
you’ll grow through affliction your Father provides,
accept what his love and his wisdom decides.

But still we can pray that he give what we need
to serve him, and witness; may ask to be freed
from pain that would hinder, or things that prevent
our efforts to tackle the work we’ve been sent.

Sure Joy

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Philippians 4:4
Joy flows from Jesus through faith in his Word:
Joy that is sure
purchased inheritance safely is stored,
perfect, for ever secure.
Joy in the LORD –
always rejoice in his wonderful Word!

Many the times when we sorrow or groan,
yet we have hope;
joy incorruptible, pure, we have known;
sometimes we struggle and grope;
yet we have still
cause to rejoice that he’s working his will.

Empty hilarity’s worthless and vain, –
soon it will end:
Satan deceives men to folly and pain.
God is a merciful Friend; –
true godly fear
brings with it joy to press on, persevere.

Robbed of our joy by temptation to sin –
help me to turn,
not to be selfish or proud, but like him,
bitterness, hatred, to spurn:
walk in God’s ways,
gaining real pleasure, and bringing him praise.

Those who the name of Christ Jesus revere,
sorry for sin,
will not be frightened when soon he draws near, –
joyfully welcoming him;
trials all past,
nothing to hinder enjoyment at last!

Fashioning my heart

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Breathe, Holy Spirit, blow,
shake out the fragrance fine,
fruit of your fashioning my heart
for fellowship divine.

Jesus takes great delight
in feasting with my soul,
on him I feed, and feast, and find
refreshment, grace through all.

Feelings of barrenness,
failure, fatigue and fear:
in all affliction, Comforter
come, bringing strength and cheer.

Keep me from foolish pride –
thinking I can be strong
apart from all that you supply, –
God’s grace revives my song.

Cleanse me from hateful sin,
careful to heed, obey.
Fill me with faith; and fellowship, –
walk with me all the way.
Tune: SM

The Counsellor

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Christ promised me his Counsellor,
Spirit of truth and life,
his people’s blessed Comforter,
Spirit of truth and life.
Reveal to us your love, Lord,
tender and warm embrace,
immeasurable love, Lord,
merciful, sovereign grace.

Make known the glory of my Lord,
Spirit of truth and life,
my heart enlighten in Christ’s Word,
Spirit of truth and life.

O, through the Spirit give me power,
(Spirit of truth and life),
and strength and comfort hour by hour,
Spirit of truth and life.

O Saviour, Christ, reside with me,
cleanse and remove my sin;
rich fellowship grant constantly,
Spirit of Christ within.

Come, fill me with your fullness, Lord,
Spirit of truth and life,
Christ’s power and hope and love outpoured,
Spirit of truth and life.

And help me be what Christ desires,
Spirit of truth and life;
what you create, my Lord admires,
Spirit of truth and life.
Enjoy your blood-bought bride, Lord,
purchased for your delight;
what pleasures at your side, Lord, –
riches of love and light.
Tune: Quiet Rest by C B McAfee (634 Grace)

The Spirit’s Work

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

The filling of the Holy Spirit – the Word of God and the inner witness of the Spirit
Spirit of Christ, who opens up
God’s Word, to teach the Way;
and whispers I’m my Father’s child,
constraining me to pray.

Spirit of God, you teach of love,
and kindle it within.
We love to live by Christ’s commands,
though prone to fall to sin.

Oh, Holy Spirit, you have set
apart for godliness.
I hate corruption, long for God,
and greater holiness!

Your Word shows how we’re reconciled;
you bring us peace and joy;
– exalting Christ; – enabling those
whom you would now employ.

Help me to see when sin, neglect,
makes you withdraw and grieve.
I’ll search your Word, and test my heart,
confess, repent, believe.

O do not let me be deceived!
Come, Spirit, to infill,
and influence more fully all
my thoughts, and acts, and will!
Tune: Richmond by T Haweis (tune of ‘Fill Thou my life’)

Access to God

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Ephesians 2:18
I stand amazed in the presence
of God: Father, Spirit, Son.
The Spirit brought me through Jesus
right up to the Father’s throne.
How marvellous, how wonderful:
access to a glorious place!
How marvellous, how wonderful:
God triune’s redeeming grace!

When glancing back at the quicksand
and bondage I knew before,
I realise how much the Father
had planned, and the Saviour bore.

And this the place of pure blessing,
and fellowship rich and love.
Oh, help me stay here communing,
– a foretaste of heaven above!
Tune: 87 87 87 87 irr My Saviour’s love by Charles H Gabriel
(tune of ‘I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus the Nazarene’)

‘if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live’ Romans 8:13

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Holy Spirit, gift divine,
precious treasure, you are mine:
mine to teach me by your Word, –
let your guiding voice be heard.

Holy Spirit, guest divine,
I would ever have you mine;
take the rubbish from my life,
sweep out idols, sin and strife.

Holy Spirit, furnish well,
holy home in which to dwell:
make my life to please you more,
on my heart engrave your law.

Oh, revealer of man’s sin,
recreating work begin;
bring to life that we may view
many now indwelt by you.

Tune: 77 77 eg Vienna by J H Knecht, or Aletta by W B Bradbury

and for children

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Everyone who knows the Lord,
and is now a child of God,
God’s own Spirit dwells within:
he is holy, hating sin.

Changes in our lives he’ll make:
holy fruit for Jesu’s sake.
Love and joy and peace all grow
in each one that God loves so.

Patience, kindness, faithfulness,
(happy, when we’re more like this)
gentleness and self-control,
humbly doing good to all.
